The purpose of tripwire is like a safety net.  It will help you keep track of wandering monsters or let you know when something you're waiting for has popped.  Also, when playerkilling in certain areas was a thing it helped let you know when rogues were coming in for you if you put them in areas where they would have to pass to get into your current area.
So basically it helps keep you safe and informed.
